Top-10 despite adversity for Varco at Buttonwillow Regional Rounds 11 & 12

01 November, 2022

(Bakersfield, CA) The penultimate rounds of the CalClub Spec Miata Challenge Championship kicked off this weekend with a strong field. By the time qualifying started, the field was condensed to five qualifiers within half a second. Evan Jacobs, #35 started on pole position with Austin Varco, #2, trailing by under a tenth.

When the green flag flew, Varco on the outside got a great start, pushed by Lee in fourth. David Varco, third, made an attempt on Jacobs pushing the second row three-wide. Hard charging into the first corner, both Varco’s push into the marbles resulting in some off-track contact. Like father, like son. David Varco’s #98 machine was relatively unscathed, but Austin's Miata suffered a lesser fate with damage in the front left corner and a first-lap DNF. The incident did not bring out a caution, but unfortunately ended Austin’s race. Evan Jacobs stole the show finishing first, David Varco finishing a noble third after climbing back up through the field with rear suspension damage.

Racecar driver Austin Varco races in the midpack

On Sunday, it was looking like a walk in the park for Jacobs, sitting on pole once again - chasing a double grand slam. Scraping it together for Sunday’s race, Austin Varco, plagued by suspension damage, started 9th. Jacobs led the whole race, chased closely by David Varco and an epic podium appearance from Giorgio Pierangeli wrapping up the top three. Austin charged to a 7th place result, with a 5-car battle in the midpack. Heading into the November finals, it’s looking like a tight race for the championship.
