USC Racing FSAE Team places 13th nationally with Varco behind the wheel

(Brooklyn, Michigan) Over 300 schools took to Michigan International Speedway this month to compete in the largest engineering competition in the world: the Formula SAE International Competition. The Formula SAE Michigan competition challenges teams of top university undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate, develop and compete in a car they build from scratch. The vehicle should have high performance and be sufficiently durable to successfully complete all the events at the Formula SAE competitions. Each student team design will be judged and evaluated again other competing designs in a series of Static and Dynamic events to determine the vehicle that best meets the design goals and profitably built and marketed.

After an unusual 2021 year marked by COVID-19 restrictions and supply chain issues, the USC Racing FSAE team brought an 85-hp, 420 lb pocket rocket to the competition outfitted with huge aerodynamic wings and stiff Ohlins custom suspension. The 5-member driving team was led by Varco in the dynamic events which included an autocross, endurance, fixed radius skidpad, and acceleration test; all of which measure the performance of the vehicle compared to other teams. USC Racing finished 13th overall — their strongest performance to date.
