Varco sets scorching new Lap Record, Podiums at Buttonwillow Raceway Park

02 May, 2022

(Bakersfield, CA) Heartbreak could be a characteristic word to describe Saturday’s race event at Buttonwillow Raceway Park for Austin Varco in the #121 Spec Miata. In a no-stops-barred war between Evan Jacobs, David Varco, and Austin Varco for the win, the lead position changed 14 times in 5 laps nearing the white flag. A 0.7-second margin between the three competitors meant it was anyone’s race when the white flag dropped. What couldn’t be expected was Austin Varco disappearing to a distant 7th, crossing the line pushing his car in pit-lane, running out of fuel three corners from the flag. Evan Jacobs won by less than half a second trailed by David Varco. Softening the blow, Austin Varco set a new official lap record at Buttonwillow proving that you have to accept small wins when you get them.

Sunday’s feature race was no different initially — Austin’s start on the pole and a lunge from the outside meant Jacobs leading yet another mega three-way battle for the lead until the late stages of the race. The field started to thin and the finishing order Sunday was Jacobs, Austin Varco, David Varco; Austin managed to defend his lap record and make up for yesterday’s gutwrenching loss.
